“Turn it off and then back on again”

As a business that offers IT helpline support, we inevitably take the occasional call that deserves a ‘face-palm’ moment. Fortunately, most of these can be easily resolved and we rarely need to use the old IT Crowd favourite:

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

But elsewhere, IT Support Engineers are clearly not so lucky. We’ve scoured the internet to find the best and worst helpdesk calls. Here’s our top three:

The coffee cup holder

Although this is less of a problem thanks to USB sticks, too many PCs have been ruined for it not to get a mention. This happened a lot a few years ago, typically along these lines:

User: I’ve got a problem with my PCs cup holder. It wasn’t up to the job and has broken. Now my PC has got coffee all over it and isn’t working.

Helpdesk: What cup holder?

User: You know, you push a button and a little drawer slides out.

Helpdesk: Oh. You mean the CD tray…

Can’t find the printer

A user called in unable to use his printer.

Hi, good afternoon, I can’t print.  Every time I try, it says ‘Can’t find printer’. I’ve even lifted the printer and put it right it in front of the computer, but it still says it can’t find it.

Password

A user called in struggling to access a shared computer.

Helpdesk: Are you certain you used the right password?

User: Yes I’m positive. I even saw my colleague do it and it was very easy to remember.

Helpdesk: Can you tell me what the password was?

User: Yes, it was six stars.
